Started From the Bottom Now We’re… Back at the Bottom

Today I feel a kindred connection to Jo March as she cried in the night on behalf of her ‘one beauty’. Long story short, I botched my hair. My 4-month grow out journey turned the clock back to zero. What started as a simple root touch up turned into a 48-hour test of my sanity. Walking into Sally’s Beauty Supply store for the fourth time in two days, crying and wrestling with my frantic child was a sight to see, let me tell you! The look of horror on the rainbow-haired Gen Z’s faces when my red Prius pulled into the front lot yet again was worthy of a polaroid. But I swallowed my pride, donned my beanie, and marched to the hair color isle with my hairdresser best friend on FaceTime. With patience and grace, she held my hand (virtually), reassuring me that everybody makes mistakes and it’s nothing that a 5N can’t fix.

Feeling a sense of relief (and sheepishness) I throw back the hair color swatches that my son ripped off the shelf while I was distracted and march us both over to the cash register. Without missing a beat, the adorable girl with a giant septum piercing asked, “Didn’t you just buy bleach and toner?” Humbled, I tried desperately to think of a reasonable response. Thankfully, my son has impeccable timing and made all the girls laugh by asking if the face masks displayed in front of us were poisonous. (I owe you a Happy Meal, little man.) I hurriedly paid and left the store, praying it was the last time.

The weekend that started high hopes of a chin length cool blonde bob ended with a warm red/brown pixie cut. Now, the whole reason I bring this up here on Modern Mommie is this: Hormones change your hair, and it’s the worst. This bleach and toner recipe was not new to me. I was not experimenting with products I’d never used before. I have done this dozens of times! I loved the results and could not quite figure out what the deal was. But looking back, it was all pre-2018. Pre-baby. Since the hormone shifts, my hair just does not lift like it used to. I can’t really explain it, but I know it’s real. To reach the same blonde levels, I must do twice the processing, twice the damage and sometimes it just still does not work at all.

These are just my own observations. It’s not the same for everyone but I have two lessons that I have learned through this awful experience.

  1. Just because something worked once, doesn’t mean it will be the exact same next time.

Hormones can affect our natural hair color as well as the way hair color is processed, whether we are at a salon or at home. Even simply the hormonal changes around our cycle. Don’t be blindsided by that. (Seriously, look it up. It’s a real thing.)

  • Go to a professional when you are bleaching your hair.

I feel comfortable touching up my own roots with a simple brown or something. The margin of error is quite a bit less. But my god, please see an experienced hair stylist if you want blonde. It may not be cheap, but it is so worth it. It’s an intricate process. An art. I may look at a Monet or Van Gogh and think I can easily replicate it. How hard can it be, right? It’s hard. Don’t do it. Leave the art to the artist.

So here I am. Started from the bottom now we’re… back at the bottom Drake.

Dry Skin Rescue

Last year my family and I made a cross country move from the extremely humid southern U.S. to the very dry west. Halfway into the move, right around the time we reached the Arizona desert, I started to experience the absolute worst itchy, dry skin I’ve ever had. I also broke out in eczema and near constant hives. I have always been on the parched side when it comes to my skin but this was unprecedented. The itching was so bad I was drawing blood with my scratching. Because of that I got a skin infection which required antibiotics. Nothing brought relief, I tried everything to moisturize and stop the itching. Medicated lotions and creams, all natural lotions and soaps but nothing lasted. I’d have to reapply seemingly every 10 minutes just to get through the day. I was going out of my skull and wished I could crawl out of my skin.

Finally, just when I was just about to resign myself to my pruritic fate, I decided to try one more thing. Thinking, instead of buying one more lotion where the first ingredient was water, why not go straight to the moisturizing source. Shea butter. 100% natural, raw shea butter. Talk about a holy grail hack.

I purchased the SheaMoisture brand, it comes in four sizes. 3oz, 6oz, 12oz and 15oz. It’s about a dollar an ounce but absolutely worth it. My 6oz container has lasted about 2 months and still isn’t empty. It’s super rich so a little goes a long way. It is pretty solid so it takes a bit of work to get out of the container but your body heat will soften it to a spreadable texture. It’s the only thing I’ve tried that keeps me moisturized all day. It’s healed my eczema and has even helped tame my psoriasis (which I had prior to the itching incident). Now I rarely get hives, and even some of the scars from scratching have lightened. I love it because it’s only one ingredient and has almost no smell. Which is great because some natural oils and butters smell icky. It’s definitely a heavy moisturizer so it’s best for very dry skin types. However, it absorbs fairly quickly and I can use it on my face as an overnight moisturizer and it doesn’t break me out. It’s obviously not a cure all and sometimes I still get hives and get itchy but it is nothing, I mean nothing, like it was before. So if you’re searching for something to ease your dry skin issues give this a try, it may just be what keeps you from losing your ever loving mind and/or scraping off all of your beautiful skin.

Are There Sunscreen No No’s? Four Products Worth Trying

no copyright infringement is intended8a49f46e-24e2-4904-bc4c-f5706075e4ee

When it comes to sun protection, we seem to get a constant barrage of warnings and reminders to protect ourselves from those cancer-causing rays. This is not something to be taken lightly. For most of my teenage and adult life, I was more concerned with looking tan than about sun damage. (I’m not even going to talk about tanning beds!) However, seeing sun spots and premature aging on my skin at only 26, I am singing a different tune. This has not been an easy transition for me. I absolutely love laying out in the sun and watching my tan build. But alas, I have accepted that my tan from here on out will be from a bottle. (Stay tuned for future self-tanner reviews and recommendations)

So does this mean that all sunscreens are created equal? Not necessarily.

Recent studies have shown that certain chemicals found in chemical sunscreen have shown up in the bloodstream with daily use. Go figure. *insert eye roll here*  Some of these ingredients are oxybenzone, avobenzone, octisalate, octocrylene, homosalate and octinoxate. Now, the extent that these chemicals effect our health is unclear. Not to mention the effect on the ocean. The FDA has not officially said they should not be used, but they are under further study.  I’m certainly not a scientist or health professional. I’m also not a super crunchy, health guru that requires everything to be chemical free and organic. (That’s totally cool if you are. You inspire me!) But it’s understandable that this would be a concern to some.

That leaves us with mineral sun blocks. These usually contain only zinc oxide or titanium dioxide that act to physically block the sun. The downside is that nasty white cast it leaves on the skin that seems impossible to completely rub in. Many view this as a small price to pay when it comes to their health.

I, myself, take a neutral position on this subject. Because of this, I have listed two products that contain these ingredients, and two that do not. Everyone loves options, right? These are all products from brands I would recommend.

First up is Matte Zinc Sunscreen SPF 50 Waterblock by the brand SolRX

retail: $16.50

3.4oz

SolRX_50_ZINC_tube-002_1024x1024@2x

solrx.com/…products/spf-50-zinc-sunscreen

What I love about the SolRX sunscreen is its staying power.  It is water resistant so it’s great for days by the pool or for athletes who will work up a good sweat and don’t want it to disappear. It also protects against the UVB rays as well as UVA so you can feel extra protected. It’s not free of all the chemicals listed above but it is FDA approved and  oxybenzone free!

Active Ingredients

Octocrylene – 10%

Octinoxate – 7.5%

Zinc Oxide – 15.0%

Next is a sunscreen designed for use on the face which I think is super important because that’s where we are most concerned about signs of aging and it’s the easiest place to forget about.

Coola Mineral Face SPF30 Cucumber

retail: $36.00

1.7 oz

coola

ulta.com/mineral-face-spf30-matte-cucumber

This product is on the spendy side for sure. If you are one that uses a primer under your foundation, you might be able to replace it with this product depending on your skin type and primer needs. Also, you only need a little bit to cover your face so it will still last you quite a long time. Since it is a mineral sunscreen, you don’t have to worry about the chemicals in question. Definitely a great product I would recommend.

Active Ingredients

Titanium Dioxide  3.2%

Zinc Oxide 1.8%

Bare Republic Mineral Sport Lotion SPF 50

retail: $14.99

4oz

bare

I’m new to using Bare Republic products, but i love that they include ingredients such as kukui seed oil for moisture and algae extract for anti aging. This product is also free of all concerning chemical sunscreens. Thumbs up from me!

Active Ingredients

Titanium Dioxide 5.6%

Zinc Oxide 3.7%

Alba Botanica Hawaiian Sunscreen SPF 30

retail: $7.00

4oz

alba

walmart.com/…-Lotion-SPF-30-4-Oz/24819837

In general, I love Alba Botanica products. I feel like they have great ingredients and are reasonably priced. This sunscreen boasts that it is free of oxybenzone, octinoxate, PABA, nano-sunscreens and Vitamin A and free of active ingredients that may harm coral reefs. Cool! However, this is a chemical sunscreen. Just because you can buy it at the health food store does not mean it is free from ALL chemicals. If you feel strongly about this, you might want to pass it up. I find it to be a great sunscreen when I want to protect myself but also get a little glow.

Active Ingredients

Avobenzone – 3.0%

Homosalate – 7.5%

Octocrylene – 7.5%

Octyl Salicylate – 5.0%

Summer is such a wonderful season. It is warm and happy and filled with frappuccinos! Have a blast, soak up that lovely Vitamin D and don’t forget to protect and hydrate your skin!

Beauty Tip-Waterproof Mascara Removal

silver plastic tube

I have recently, like within the last year, started wearing waterproof mascara on a daily basis. Usually, such a drastic make-up measure was only undertaken in the face (pun intended) of special events, like weddings, graduations etc., when I knew copious tears were a distinct possibility. However, I was troubled. I was blessed, *cough* cursed *cough*, with the darkest of dark circles. Like if my under eyes were a person they’d be Batman. That being the case I cannot really be seen in public without a full coverage concealer, that is, not unless I want everyone asking me if I’m feeling okay. Even with setting powder and baking I was still finding my mascara bleeding and transferring onto my concealer. Again, giving me the under eyes of an allergenic panda, blackness worthy of the Dark Knight himself.

After searching, trying out, and disappointing myself countless times in hopes of finding a mascara that would not leave me raccoon-eyed by noon, I gave up the ghost and bought the waterproof. Now, there may be real make-up artists out there who have a non-waterproof-mascara-using solution to this problem, if you do please share it with me. However, this is the best solution this laywoman has found. Now maybe your thinking ‘really? that’s her tip? wear waterproof mascara? Lame’. But au contrair, this is actually a long-winded way of getting to the actual beauty tip. Successful removal of said mascara.

Now in my first few attempts to get it all off, I managed to get it ALL off. Like my eyelashes too. My worst waterproof fear was realized. At this rate I soon would need no mascara at all, instead I would need eyelash plugs. This simply would not do. There had to be a better way. I searched ye olde interwebs for a solution. Mostly what I found used oil as the key ingredient to soften the formula and make it easier to remove. Great! Except every attempt ended with me blinded by a black tinted oil slick. The worst. So I went back further into the beauty archives searching for the answers.

Cold cream. The holy grail beauty product of yestercentury. I never liked using it on my skin because it’s very sensitive and the formula always made my face burn. But I had to admit, it was fantastic at getting everything off. So I thought why not try it on just my lashes? Let me tell you, it has changed my make-up removing life!

So here are the instructions for easy, non-eyelash-ripping waterproof mascara removal.

Tools needed: 1 clean spoolie and a jar of cold cream. I purchased a pack of disposable spoolies from Sally’s and a jar of Pond’s brand cold cream from Target.

Steps: Dip spoolie into the cold cream until fully covered and apply to lashes as you would mascara. As with any cleanser, avoid eye contact, like you would with the weirdo behind you in the check-out line. It will sting if it gets in there, so take care. When eyelashes are sufficiently coated continue with the removal of foundation and stuff. (I use micellar water and cotton rounds to remove mine, but if you use regular rinse off cleanser, just do this a first step.) This allows time for the cream to do its magic. Then after two or three minutes use a remover wipe or micellar water on a cotton round to remove as you would regular ol’ mascara. Again careful to not get it in your eyes.

Et Voila! No more make-up. Lush naked lashes intact.

Love,

Sarah

Holy Grail No. 1

When you cycle through beauty products as much as I do, sooner or later you hit upon a few items that you cannot live without from that point on. For me, this doesn’t happen very often for a number of reasons.

First of all, I love trying new things so when I finish a product, I’m anxious to experiment with new releases. Also, my skin changes with the seasons so my needs at any given point can vary greatly. That being said, I have a few “Holy Grail” products that I adore and would recommend to any of my Modern Mommies.

Holy grail No.1: Bare Minerals Complexion Rescue Tinted Hydrating Gel Cream

Color: Vanilla 02

Retail: 32.00

I love this tinted gel for an every day kind of wear. As much as I love a full coverage foundation and glamming it up on a Friday night, I simply don’t have the time to make that happen and get out the door in the morning, especially now that I have a six month old to care for. But I don’t want to look dead either so this basically saves my life! The sheer coverage evens out my skin tone and helps minimize redness. With the smooth consistency, it takes minimal blending and can be applied with the fingertips. Pair it with a little concealer for those persistent dark circles, a dab of blush and a bit of mascara and you are good to go! Five minutes and you look bright, awake and ready to take on the the day.
