Beauty Tip-Waterproof Mascara Removal

silver plastic tube

I have recently, like within the last year, started wearing waterproof mascara on a daily basis. Usually, such a drastic make-up measure was only undertaken in the face (pun intended) of special events, like weddings, graduations etc., when I knew copious tears were a distinct possibility. However, I was troubled. I was blessed, *cough* cursed *cough*, with the darkest of dark circles. Like if my under eyes were a person they’d be Batman. That being the case I cannot really be seen in public without a full coverage concealer, that is, not unless I want everyone asking me if I’m feeling okay. Even with setting powder and baking I was still finding my mascara bleeding and transferring onto my concealer. Again, giving me the under eyes of an allergenic panda, blackness worthy of the Dark Knight himself.

After searching, trying out, and disappointing myself countless times in hopes of finding a mascara that would not leave me raccoon-eyed by noon, I gave up the ghost and bought the waterproof. Now, there may be real make-up artists out there who have a non-waterproof-mascara-using solution to this problem, if you do please share it with me. However, this is the best solution this laywoman has found. Now maybe your thinking ‘really? that’s her tip? wear waterproof mascara? Lame’. But au contrair, this is actually a long-winded way of getting to the actual beauty tip. Successful removal of said mascara.

Now in my first few attempts to get it all off, I managed to get it ALL off. Like my eyelashes too. My worst waterproof fear was realized. At this rate I soon would need no mascara at all, instead I would need eyelash plugs. This simply would not do. There had to be a better way. I searched ye olde interwebs for a solution. Mostly what I found used oil as the key ingredient to soften the formula and make it easier to remove. Great! Except every attempt ended with me blinded by a black tinted oil slick. The worst. So I went back further into the beauty archives searching for the answers.

Cold cream. The holy grail beauty product of yestercentury. I never liked using it on my skin because it’s very sensitive and the formula always made my face burn. But I had to admit, it was fantastic at getting everything off. So I thought why not try it on just my lashes? Let me tell you, it has changed my make-up removing life!

So here are the instructions for easy, non-eyelash-ripping waterproof mascara removal.

Tools needed: 1 clean spoolie and a jar of cold cream. I purchased a pack of disposable spoolies from Sally’s and a jar of Pond’s brand cold cream from Target.

Steps: Dip spoolie into the cold cream until fully covered and apply to lashes as you would mascara. As with any cleanser, avoid eye contact, like you would with the weirdo behind you in the check-out line. It will sting if it gets in there, so take care. When eyelashes are sufficiently coated continue with the removal of foundation and stuff. (I use micellar water and cotton rounds to remove mine, but if you use regular rinse off cleanser, just do this a first step.) This allows time for the cream to do its magic. Then after two or three minutes use a remover wipe or micellar water on a cotton round to remove as you would regular ol’ mascara. Again careful to not get it in your eyes.

Et Voila! No more make-up. Lush naked lashes intact.

Sarah

Holy Grail No. 1

When you cycle through beauty products as much as I do, sooner or later you hit upon a few items that you cannot live without from that point on. For me, this doesn’t happen very often for a number of reasons.

First of all, I love trying new things so when I finish a product, I’m anxious to experiment with new releases. Also, my skin changes with the seasons so my needs at any given point can vary greatly. That being said, I have a few “Holy Grail” products that I adore and would recommend to any of my Modern Mommies.

Holy grail No.1: Bare Minerals Complexion Rescue Tinted Hydrating Gel Cream

Color: Vanilla 02

Retail: 32.00

I love this tinted gel for an every day kind of wear. As much as I love a full coverage foundation and glamming it up on a Friday night, I simply don’t have the time to make that happen and get out the door in the morning, especially now that I have a six month old to care for. But I don’t want to look dead either so this basically saves my life! The sheer coverage evens out my skin tone and helps minimize redness. With the smooth consistency, it takes minimal blending and can be applied with the fingertips. Pair it with a little concealer for those persistent dark circles, a dab of blush and a bit of mascara and you are good to go! Five minutes and you look bright, awake and ready to take on the the day.
